FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS - June 1999

"Miraculous" Play Up Next

Our Outsiders & Outlaws series continues Wednesday, June 16, with "Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches" (1991), by Tony Kushner. An "epic cliffhanger" (Variety) that's also "falling-down funny" (Newsday), "Millennium Approaches" is "vast, miraculous, provocative, witty and deeply upsetting" (The New York Times). Its characters include a Mormon law clerk, his pill-popping wife, a black ex-drag queen, a nice Jewish boy with attachment problems, a prophet with AIDS, Republican superlawyer Roy Cohn, & a very stimulating angel. The play won every award under heaven including the 1993 Pulitzer Prize; the original Broadway production received the most Tony nominations in history.

Our meeting will feature director Lee Mikeska Gardner, whose production of "Millennium Approaches" runs through July 3 at Signature Theatre. Lee Gardner has acted or directed at nearly every DC-area theater. She has received 2 Helen Hayes nominations as a director, for "Life During Wartime" and "Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)"--both at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Co.--& a 3d nomination as an actress for her starring role in Freedom Stage's "Patient A."

We will meet at Luna Books, 1633 P St., NW, 3 blocks E of Dupont Circle. Dinner begins at 6:30 & our discussion at 7:30. Make reservations by calling 202-638-0444 or e-mailing [email protected].   For copies of "Angels," fly to NW DC, to Backstage Books, 2101 P St., or--for a special Footlights discount--to Olsson's, 1307 19th St., or Politics & Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave.

Take the "Road to Mecca"

We conclude our Outsiders & Outlaws series on Thursday, July 22 with "The Road to Mecca" (1984), an "eloquent and transforming" play (Christian Science Monitor) by the most "urgent and indispensable playwright in world theatre" (Newsweek), South African Athol Fugard. Set in a remote region of South Africa & inspired by the life of controversial artist Helen Martins, "Mecca" provides our final look at the outsider in modern drama. Our meeting will feature director Jim Petosa, whose production of "The Road to Mecca" we'll attend at the Olney Theatre, 2001 Olney- Sandy Spring Rd. (MD-108), 2 p.m. Sunday August 29. Tickets are $19. Mail your check, payable to Footlights, to Robin Larkin, 5403 Nibud Ct., Rockville, MD 20852.
