FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS - October 1998Landmark "Raisin" Continues Outsiders SeriesOn Wednesday, October 21, our "outsiders" series continues with Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" (1959). This searing yet warm-hearted portrayal of an African-American family's struggle to escape the Chicago ghetto "changed American theater forever" (The New York Times). "One of the handful of great American plays" (The Washington Post), "Raisin" won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and became a celebrated film starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee. Our discussion features director Scot Reese, whose production of the play opens at the Olney Theatre October 6. Professor Reese recently directed "An Asian Jockey In Our Midst" and "Pantomime" at the Round House Theatre and "Man, Woman, Dinosaur" at the Woolly Mammoth. He is currently writing a book about African- American theater directors.
