FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS - June 2000

"Can't Put It Down"

Our Time and Memory series continues Tuesday, June 20, with the question:   "Who owns your memories?" "Collected Stories" (1996), by Brooklyn native Donald Margulies, portrays the deepening relationship between a successful, middle-aged writer with a secret past, & her young protegee, a good listener gathering material for her first novel. "Can't Put It Down" ran the headline in the Los Angeles Times, which called "Collected Stories" "thoroughly engrossing." "Intelligent" & "touching" (London Daily Telegraph), "literate, absorbing [and] constantly amusing" (New York Daily News), "Collected Stories" is "eloquently presented" & "compellingly realized" (Chicago Tribune). Donald Margulies won the Pulitzer Prize for "Dinner With Friends" (1999).

Our meeting will feature our annual visit from director Jim Petosa, artistic director of Olney Theatre, where Jim most recently directed "Peter Pan" & "Death of a Salesman." His production of "Collected Stories" opens at Theater J July 9. In 1996 Jim received a Helen Hayes award for directing "Jacques Brel." Jim will be making his 5th appearance at the
Footlights.

We will meet at Luna Books, 1633 P St., NW (3d floor), 3 blocks E of Dupont Circle. Dinner begins at 6:30; our discussion takes place 7:30-9:30. Make reservations by contacting Mark Gruenberg (202-638-0444 & painews@bellatlantic.net). Collect "Stories" at Backstage Books, 545 8th St., SE, & for a discount at Super Crown, 11 Dupont Circle, Olsson's Books & Records, 1307 19th St., NW, & Politics & Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave., NW.

The End of Time

On Wednesday, July 19, we sum up Time and Memory with a discussion of "Time and the Conways" (1937), by British journalist, novelist, essayist, & playwright J.B. Priestley. Both the story of a family & the exploration of a theory of time, "Time and the Conways" starts with a birthday party in 1919, jumps to another birthday in 1937, then returns in act III to 1919. It's "about the way life mocks hope" (The Spectator (London)), "tenderly wistful" (The New York Times) & "continuously interesting" (The Times (London)). "Time and the Conways" runs April 13-October 28 at the Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. For further information call 800-511-SHAW or visit www.shawfest.sympatico.ca.
