FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS - November 1999

Sex & Crime:  "Doors" Into Time

On Wednesday, November 17, our series "Time and Memory" continues with "Communicating Doors" (1994), by Alan Ayckbourn, "England's most prolific playwright since Shakespeare" (Wall Street Journal). A blend of sex farce, crime thriller, and science fiction, "Communicating Doors" follows a leather-clad 21st-century prostitute from her time to ours and back again. "[F]ast, funny, and ultimately even quite moving" (Christian Science Monitor), it's "vintage Ayckbourn," with "depth, despair and, finally, redemption" (Time Magazine).

Our meeting will feature director Nick Olcott, the only person in the history of the Helen Hayes Awards to receive nominations in three different categories: actor, director, & playwright. Olcott has directed or acted in six previous plays by Alan Ayckbourn. He's associate artistic director of Round House Theatre, where his production of "Communicating Doors" previews November 3.

We will meet at Delray Vietnamese Garden, 4918 Del Ray Ave., a few blocks N of Bethesda metro. Take both up escalators, turn left onto Old Georgetown Rd., walk up to Del Ray Ave. & turn right. Old Georgetown Rd., Del Ray Ave., & Cordell Ave. have cheap garages & parking lots. Dinner begins at 6:30 & our discussion at 7:30. Make reservations by calling 202-638-0444 or e-mailing painews@bellatlantic.net. Open "Doors" at Backstage Books, 2101 P St., NW, & for a discount at Super Crown, 11 Dupont Circle, Olsson's Books & Records, 1307 19th St., NW, & Politics & Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave., NW. .

On Sunday, November 21, at 3 p.m., Footlights will attend "Communicatin Doors" at Round House Theatre, 12210 Bushey Dr., between Randolph & Veirs Mill Roads & just W of Connecticut Ave. in Silver Spring. Robin will hand out tickets in the lobby just before the performance. Afterwards we'll have dinner at Dynasty, 11123 Veirs Mill Rd., Wheaton.

"On the Verge" of a New Century

On Thursday, December 16, Footlights continues time-traveling with a play about the relentless forward motion of time & language: "On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning)" (1985), by American playwright Eric Overmyer.  "On the Verge" follows three Victorian "lady explorers" across space, time, & American culture from 1888 to 1955 & beyond. This is "word-play at its most playful" (Baltimore Sun), "a filigreed confection of theatrical brain food" (San Francisco Chronicle) "difficult to resist"  (The New York Times). Our meeting will feature Catholic University drama professor Jackson Phippin, who directed the world premiere of "On the Verge" at Baltimore's Center Stage.
